Darwin College Green Guide: Energy
Climate change is an increasing concern, as reflected in the US Pentagon's recent controversial report. This document outlines its outlook for climate change between now and 2010. Read more about recent developments in the climate change debate on the Observer website. Did you know: A return trip from London to New York for one individual, generates more CO2 than driving a family car for 3 months? There are currently a number of schemes in place which try to help offset carbon production levels, by investing in projects such as planting trees that help to absorb the carbon produced by airline traffic. One such organisation is Climate Care and their main project is in Kibale, Uganda. Every time you take a flight, this site allows you to calculate the resulting amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. You can offset that and clean your conscience (!) by giving the equivalent money to that NGO for their projects... to give you an idea, it amounts to £5 for a return flight London Brussels... and about £19 for the Philippines. The increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide produced by the burning of fossil fuels, contributes to global warming. It is important to reduce consumption of fossil fuels, and we in Darwin can contribute by saving energy and money:
