Darwin Tennis - Courts
Newnham College Courts
The only legal place
we can play at is the Newnham College courts which are surfaced with pebbles
and has nearly invisible back lines. Therefore, I usually search for better
courts around Cambridge to play in. Other colleges’ courts can be used
if you can convince your friends who are members of those colleges. Otherwise,
the courts at Jesus Green are the best as they have clear distinguished
lines and two colours to help you judge your shots. E-mail me if you have
problems.
Lawn Tennis
Lawn tennis is played
during the summer months around the exam period (i.e. May/ June). The colleges
will put their nets out on the grass fields and mark the lines out. So
take advantage of the opportunity to play on grass during this time as
they will let the grass grow and take the nets away during August and September.
Indoor Tennis Courts
Indoor tennis courts
are really expensive but relatively cheap compared to the rest of the world.
They costs around £7 to £13 an hour depending on the
venue and the times of play. Obviously, play during normal working hours
will be cheaper than play after 5 pm. There are two centres you can go
to in Cambridge.
They are: Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre and Long Road Tennis Centre. I have the telephone numbers and rates if you request them from me.
Clay Courts
I personally like
to play on clay as I tend to win matches based on my powers of attrition.
So, if after the French Open, you feel inspired to emulate Alex Corretja,
then Hills Road is the place to go. The cost is £5.00 an hour
if you book it as a member of Darwin College. The
courts are really new too as they have just been completed in April’ 2000
after a renovation that lasted about 18 months.
