New Master for Darwin College

If Professor Fowler's name seems familiar to you, it is because she is herself an Old Darwinian, having studied Geophysics here as a PhD student from 1972—1976. As though this direct connection were not enough, her husband and one of her children are also Old Darwinians. Professor Euan Nisbet studied for a PhD in Geology (1970) and is currently Professor of Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway. Dr Ellen Nisbet was here from 2000-2005 and took her PhD in Biochemistry; she then became a Junior Research Fellow and now is a Lecturer at the University of South Australia.

Professor Fowler comes from a very distinguished academic family, possibly the best known of whom in Cambridge terms is her great-grandfather, Ernest Rutherford (The 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, OM, FRS (30 Aug 1871—19 Oct 1937), a Nobel Prize winner (Chemistry 1908), known as the father of nuclear physics.

There will be full reports about our new Master, and Willy Brown's retirement, in the next issue of The Darwinian.
