Room Allocation Policy

This statement describes the room allocation policy that was adopted by the college at the beginning of the academic year 2002-2003. Changes to the former policy were a result of a student survey supported and endorsed by both the college authorities and the Darwin College Students' Association. Amendments were made to the previous policy as it was found that there was a genuine need to provide accommodation to all incoming first year members.

Additional accommodation for first year members can only be made available by reducing the number of rooms that are allocated by ballot to existing Darwin members. Therefore the number of rooms going into the ballot was reduced from 80 rooms to 60 rooms in 2002-2003, and reduced again to 40 rooms in 2003-2004.

The following students are eligible to participate in the ballot:

  1. Darwin members currently in their first year of PhD who were not allocated any accommodation in the current academic year.
  2. College members who have never had college accommodation and shall be paying fees.

The following students are not eligible for accommodation:

  1. Darwin members who have already taken up one or more year(s) of accommodation in college.
  2. MPhil students who are carrying on for a PhD.
  3. MPhil students who are registering for another MPhil course.

Any rooms remaining in the ballot will be allocated to students who have only utilised one year of accommodation. This would be done in the Second ballot. The dates for this ballot will be announced on the students email list WHATS UP!
