DCS: Local Heritage Event:
Verdi Requiem at Kings College Chapel

Saturday 26th March 2011 Return to Alumni Events

Darwin College Society purchased a small number of tickets through the block booking scheme for the performance the Requiem by Giussepe Verdi at Kings College Chapel. The piece was performed by the Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra together with the combined choirs of the Cambridge Philharmonic Society and the Amersfoot Choral Society which was soon to be performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as a part of a reciprocal scheme. It was the first experiment of an evening musical event but it was a great success for the DCS, which will encourage us to more such events.

The joint choirs produced a wall of sound very well suited to the Requiem which created a huge contrasts to the guest singers gentler solo parts sung by Tinuke Olafiimihan, Anna Burford, Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts and Piotra Lempa. It was especially magnificent in the Dies Irae and it certainly felt right to have a performance with so many choristers. The backdrop of Cambridge's famous chapel could not have been a more ideal venue even if it did seem a little small with such large numbers of performers.
