Bumped by Anglia Ruskin
After a massively encouraging improvement over the last few weeks, the crew was focused and with high hopes for the first race of May Bumps. Our start was crisp and swift, so much that we got the first whistle while chasing Anglia Ruskin just before finishing the start sequence. This motivation kept us pulling as hard as we could, and we were able to shorten the distance between both crews. However, Anglia were able to prevent us from getting closer just for long enough to allow a truly inspired Sydney Sussex to close in quickly on us after taking a wide curve at First Post corner, resulting in a bump. Not the result we were aiming for, but after shaking off the anxiety of the first day we are looking forward for tomorrow's race.
Thursday
Bumped by Wolfson I
Based on yesterday's performance, and seeing the wide gap left between Sydney and Wolfson, our plan for today was to keep our fellow grad students at bay and row over. The start was great and we settled in a good rhythm after the Highway Bridge. Closing onto First Post corner, however, Wolfson started to push forward fast. The crew was mentally prepared for a longer race, and the sudden power surge caught us by surprise. Although we managed to pick up some speed, our chaser's bow ball already had a few centimeters of overlap with the stern. The unpredictability of the Bumps took its tow on us today, but we won't be holding back anything on Friday.
Friday
Bumped by Pembroke II
We knew today's race was not going to be an easy one by a long shot. Knowing what Pembroke were capable of, our strategy was quite straightforward: bump Wolfson before we get bumped. We managed to pull out a very strong start and within a few strokes got a first whistle. Wolfson caught up some speed, but we responded and obtained a whistle for the second time. Just before reaching First Post Corner (which shall live in infamy for us Darwinians for quite some time) we had shortened the distance with Wolfson to about half a length. Unfortunately the choppy water damaged our balance and Pembroke closed in and bumped. Suffice to say, the atmosphere back at the boathouse was rather bleak.
