City Sprints
After the men in the morning, the Darwin women were in action in the City Sprints, a serie of 400 m long side by side regattas in front of the boathouses, from the Cutter Ferry Bridge to the City of Cambridge Rowing Club boathouse.

Crew: Katerina Bilitou, Jenny Robison, Daniel Zerbino, Vanessa Brown, Marloes Bagijn, Russ Glenn (cox), Jessie Hohmann, Evgenia Ilyinskaya, Florence Cavalli.

Darwin W1 were victorious during the first race against Selwyn. Darwin took an early lead and worked to create further distance winning the race by a length.
Darwin W1 started their final race with a great start and powered through the clashing blades to row faster than St. Eddies but in the end losing the battle with the disqualifying marshals.

Darwin 2nd ladies easily winning against Selwyn in the semi-finale.

Head to Head
The 11th of May was a Super Sunday for the City of Cambridge Rowing Club and for Darwin College too. The men's first VIII started the day with the Head to Head, a double head race between the railway bridge and the motorway birdge (2.2 k).

They covered the first race (downstream) in 7 min 02 and the second one (upstream) in 7 min 05 (more results here).

Head of the Cam
Today, Darwin M1 raced in the Head of the Cam. They covered the 2600 m, from the motorway bridge to the Green Dragon bridge, in 9 min 49 and finished at the 21st position (see complete results here).

A big thank you to Jessie who filmed the whole race.

A high quality version can be seen on Youtube and a couple of pictures here.

Radegund Mile
Only 1 mile long, starting at the Plough pub, finishing just after the Penny Ferry pub... with beers and burgers waiting for us at the end... that's the Radegund Mile!

After a month long break, Darwin M1 is back on the river and they covered the 1600 meters in 5 min 32, beating all the town VIIIs and finishing at the 4th position in the University boat category... 24 seconds ahead of Girton M1, our main enemy in Bumps! (More results can be found here.)

Daniel Zerbino, Adrian Tan, Oliver Holmes, Dominic Schmidt, Sebastian Müller, Stéphane Forsik, Russ Glenn (super cox), Andreas Lintz, James Minshull.

Well done guys for the performance, the face paint and the sexy socks and a big thank you to Jessie who supported us and took some pictures. A video of the complete race will be uploaded on Youtube soon.

All the pictures can be found here and a video of the race on Youtube.

Mar 15nd, 2008:
Head of the River Race
The second largest rowing event in the world, the Head of the River Race, took place on Saturday 15 March 2008 and Darwin M1 was there!
Every year, the HORR attracts 420 clubs, including the best clubs in the UK as well as several foreign clubs, that compete over 6.8 km on the Thames, during the ebb tide, from Mortlake to Putney.

Darwin covered that distance in 21 min 8 sec and finished at the 327th position. The complete results can be found here.

Darwin M1, about to boat from Furnival.

Four awesome DCBC members also joined M1 for that day and shouted at us, with the boat club flag, from Hammersmith Bridge.

Crew, coach and bank party: James Fowler, Sarah, Stéphane Forsik, Amyas Phillips, Rebecca Rancourt, Bodhi Rader, Richard Darby, Dominic Schmidt, Sebastian Müller, Mark de Rond (coach), Ruth McKnight (cox), Claudia Crovace, Daniel Zerbino, Olivia Lewis.

Thanks to Ruth and Sebastian for organising everything, to Mark for his precious advice and to all the bank party for making that trip to London a very fun day!

All the pictures can be found here.

GO DARWIIIIN!

Mar 13nd, 2008:
Cardinals Regatta
On Thursday 13 March, a Darwin mixed crew dressed up as cheerleaders to compete in the Cardinals Regatta, a 500 m side by side knock-out regatta on the Long Reach.

A German-speaking coach and chocolate, flowers, sweets & fruits for the marshalls allowed them to have a slight head start but they were facing Downing, which were definitely stronger and more experienced. Darwin fought hard right from the start but Dowing were slowly catching up on them and finaly beat them.
Downing were maybe the fastest but our Darwin cheerleaders were the sexiest!

The crew:
Stephanie Trojan, Veronika Trojan
Olivia Lewis (cox), Anna Mieczakowski, Vanessa Brown
Mark Barber, Brandan Cooney, Ignacio Pisso, Pietro de Matteis

See more pictures of the race here.

Our sexy cheersleaders just before their first race against Downing.

D... A... R... W... I... N... DARWIN!

Thanks to the bank party!

Feb 22nd, 2008:
Getting on Race
On Friday 22 February 2008, Darwin second men's VIII competed in the Getting on Race, from the Little Bridge to the finishing post 78 yards downstream of the Railway Bridge and covered the 2 km in 08:48.

They began their race with a good start and were constantly pushing away the boat behind them. Their cox Barasa took the best line in First Post, Grassy and Ditton corners and she managed to keep her crew focused on a very windy Reach.

Waves and strong wind gusts didn't prevent Darwin from gaining at least 4 or 5 lengths on the boat they were chasing but, unfortunately, they finished the race at the 7th position, shortly missing the last qualifying position. They nonetheless beat 11 other boats!

Nice and clean catch by M2.
Crew: Barasa Idris-Goudarz (cox), Amyas Phillips, Torsten Krude, Oliver Holmes, Mark Barber, Nicky Grant, Tomokazu Ogawa, Mike Tanner, Brendan Cooney.

Thanks to Jessie, Olivia, Seb and Stef (taking the picture, from the other side of the river) who lost their voices to support M2

Feb 17th, 2008:
Head of the Trent
On Sunday 17 February, Darwin M1 was racing in Nottingham, on the River Trent.
The Head of the Trent is 6 km long race organised by the Nottingham & Union Rowing Club and the Nottingham Rowing Club, where more than 200 boats usually compete every year.

After an early awakening at 4am, a meeting at the boat house at 5am, a 2.5 hour drive and a cheap (but disgusting) coffee at the Nottingham National Water Sports Centre, the crew discovered a wide and cold river and had to row 7 km up to the starting line. Darwin competed in the first division, in which Cambridge University, Oxford University, Leander and many other big crews were also racing.
Darwin performed very well and, with a time of 19 min 29 sec (despite a crash with a goose), managed to beat 6 town crews and was on par with some University boats.

Pembroke Regatta
Two Darwin crews (first women's and second men's) had to wake up early on Saturday 16 February to compete against others colleges in the Pembroke Regatta, a serie of 1100 m side-by-side knock-out races from the top post at the downstream end of Long Reach, up to Peter's Posts!

Darwin W1 v Newnham W1: 8:20am
Darwin M2 v Wolfson M2: 9:05am

Darwin W1 began the race with a powerful start and some great pieces and was soon well ahead of the Newnham boat. Excellent coxing and real determination from the Darwin ladies were their strong points, but unfortunately they were unable to come through in the winning position.

Katy (cox), Rebecca Rancourt, Jenny Robinson, Devin Yagel, Olivia Lewis, Katerina Bilitout, Juliana, Jessie Hohmann, Elvina Chow.

M2 didn't have a very good start and were soon distanced by Wolfson but the Darwin experience and power allowed them to catch up quite rapidely. Darwin easily surpassed Wolfson in the second part of the race and indisputably won their first-round race.
In the second round, Darwin M2 was facing King's M2 and had a much better start but this was not sufficient. After a suspensful first half of the race, King's slowly surpassed Darwin and finally won by half a length.

Tomokazu Ogawa, Mike Davis, Andreas Lints, Nicky Grant, Stéphane Forsik, James Kirkbride, Torsten Krude, Amyas Philips, Barasa (cox).

The official results can be found here. Click here to see more pictures.

Thank you to the bank party and congratulations to both crews... Sprinting in regattas is the best way to practice for Lent Bumps! GO DARWIN!

Feb 8th, 2008:
Robinson Head
Darwin first men's boat competed in the Robinson Head on Friday 8 February. With a time of 9:01, they finished at the 5th position (out of 37 boats) and beat their main Bumps rivals.

Congratulations guys!

The crew: Ruth McKnight (cox), Sebastian Müller, Richard Darby, Dominic Schmidt, Stéphane Forsik, James Kirkbride, Bodhi Rader, Daniel Zerbino, James Fowler.

Newnham Short Head
Two Darwin boats took part to the Newnham Short Course on Saturday 2 February: 1600 m upstream, from the Motorway Bridge to the middle of the Long Reach... with a very strong and cold head wind.
The first women's boat finished the race in 9 minutes and the first men's boat in 6 min 30. More results are available here.

Thanks to the brave ones who cycled along to support Darwin!

Winter Head to Head
Do you think it's a waste of time to warm up before a race? With the Winter Head to Head, no time for a proper warming up. You push off, race down the Cam, spin at the lock, rest 5 min and race back to the P&E, upstream!

On Saturday 19 Jan 2008, three Darwin crews (W1, M1 and M2) did 2 x 2.7 km.

Snowmen and Supermen do the Christmas Head!
The Christmas Head is surely not as long as Fairbairns nor as exciting as May Bumps but it's definitely one of the funniest race in Cambridge and the very last one of the year: 2 100 m, pub to pub, from the P&E to the Fort Saint Georges and fancy dress. A mixed and men's boat from Darwin competed.

The mixed crew, dressed up as snowmen, finished the race in 8 min 47.

Quian Miao, Sebastian Von Wuthenau, Mark Barber, Florence Cavalli, Vanessa Brown, Jessie Hohmann, Jenny Robinson, Cathy Mitchell, Liu Chen (cox).

The men's crew, in their gorgeous Supeman costumes, finished in 7 min 55.

Olivia Lewis (cox), Sebastian Müller, Stéphane Forsik, Torsten Krude, Amyas Phillips, Dominic Schmidt, Bodhi Rader, Daniel Zerbino, Andreas Lintz.

Click here for some videos of the mixed crew.

The full results can be found here.

A big thank you to those who prepared the costumes and those who came to support Darwin.

Two men's and one women's boats competed in the senior division over 4 300 m, from Jesus College to the Little Bridge. One men's and one women's boats competed in the novice division over 2 700 m, from Jesus College Boat Club to the Railings.

The five boats performed very well. Congratulations to all crews for their efforts and great times!

Emma Sprints
Due to bad weather and strong wind gusts on the Reach, Emmanuel College Boat Club had to cancel the Emma Sprints... :(

Don't throw away your costumes, you can still use them for the Christmas Head on the 15th December!

Nov 17th, 2007:
Cambridge Winter Head
First race of a busy week end for Darwin College. The men's and women's first VIII competed in the Cambridge Winter Head: 500 boats (VIII, IV, sculls) and 2500 m from the motorway bridge to the Penny Ferry pub.

The Winter Head was the first race of the term for the senior women's boat and they covered the distance in 11 min 51.

Thank you to those who came to support Darwin and screamed for us!
