Student HealthHealth Services.Students often have academic, social or personal problems which may lead to ill health and they may find it useful to discuss these problems informally with the Dean. On the other hand, members may prefer to go directly to a doctor or, for example, to the University Counselling Service (see below). In any event, every graduate member is required to register with one of the local medical practitioners, and to notify the Deanery of the name of the doctor chosen. (A form is supplied to all new members for this purpose.) This is important. Many members fail to register with a doctor on arrival or to notify the Deanery of the name of the doctor chosen. Such failure means that it may be unnecessarily difficult to take the correct action in an emergency. Illness in College or LodgingsThe College does not have a nurse, nor does it set aside a room for a sick bay; however, the facilities of Queens' College sick bay are available for dealing with minor injuries and complaints during Full Term. Students should inform the Deanery Office before taking advantage of this facility. It is most important that any member, whether living in College accommodation or elsewhere, who is ill and has nobody to help, should at once inform the Deanery, either directly or through a friend. Even if there are no special difficulties, the Deanery would like to know when members are ill, because it is often possible to provide help. SmokingDarwin has a no-smoking policy throughout the College which also includes all student accommodation. Overseas StudentsStudents coming to Britain to take a course which will last more than six months, are entitled to free treatment within the National Health Service from the time they arrive in Britain. This entitlement also applies to dependants. As for the native students, a charge is made for prescriptions for medicines, spectacles and dental care. University Counselling ServiceThis is situated at 14 Trumpington Street and is mainly for problems of a personal nature. There are three full-time counsellors, and appointments can be made either by telephone (332865), or by calling at the Service. It is open from 9.00 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and is fully confidential. Its website is here. SamaritansThe Samaritans provide emotional support to anyone in despair or feeling suicidal. Their telephone number is 01223 364455, e-mail: jo@samaritans.org and they are located at 4 Emmanuel Road. University Dental ServiceThis Service is at 3 Trumpington Street and is open from 9.00 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. Mondays to Fridays (Telephone 332860). Treatment, which is open to all, is provided under the regulations for the NHS, for which some payment is required. Priority is given to students in term time. University Health ServiceThis is situated at Fenner's, Gresham Road (Telephone 337733). People going to remote, especially tropical, areas (e.g. on expeditions) are strongly advised to consult the Service concerning vaccinations and other precautions. |
