STUDY CENTRE: COMPUTING FACILITIES
Academic computing facilities are provided within purpose-built computer
rooms on the ground floor of the Study Centre. These house a local area
network of microcomputers on which a number of common application
programs are provided. Apple Macintosh and Microsoft DOS/Windows
operating systems are supported. There is a laser printer for
high-quality printed output and dot matrix printers for draft output.
The College network has an ethernet connection to the University Data
Network, enabling high-speed access to computer networks outside the
College.
The Study Centre computer network came into operation during the summer
of 1994 with the aim of expanding in due course to a maximum capacity of
about 30 microcomputers. As part of the expansion college members will
be provided with full access to the internet, including electronic mail
and the World Wide Web. In fact, students are encouraged to create their
own home page on the Web, within the Darwin College home page. The
facility is managed by a part-time Computer Officer and is overseen by a
Computing Committee that welcomes active participation by interested
College members.
