Professor David MacKay appointed as the first Regius Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge.

We are delighted to congratulate David Mackay, a Fellow of the College since 1992 and a Professorial Fellow since 2003. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2009, he was also appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government's Department of Energy and Climate Change in that year.

The Regius Professor of Engineering is a new Regius Chair, announced in 2011 to mark the Duke of Edinburgh's 34 years as Chancellor of the University. The new post is intended to provide an outstanding academic with the opportunity to build on the world-leading research at the Department of Engineering in fields that address major, global challenges. These include: creating lasting energy solutions, building cities in the future, managing risks, and driving innovation. David's recent reputation has been marked as a leading scientist and thinker on sustainability and responses to climate change and, in particular, as the author of the critically acclaimed book, "Sustainable Energy - Without The Hot Air"

Professor MacKay took up his Regius Professorship on March 29, and continues in parallel as Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government's Department of Energy and Climate Change, a post which is due to run until the autumn of 2014.

Professor Sir Geoffrey Lloyd Awarded the Dan David Prize

We are delighted to congratulate our former Master, Professor Sir Geoffrey Lloyd, on his receipt of the Dan David Prize, regarded by many as the 'Nobel Prize' of the Humanities. The Dan David website describes Geoffrey as "the greatest living scholar of the history of ancient science, who has completely transformed the field over the last four decades. He has brought together insights from anthropology, sociology and general history to bear upon the history of ideas". Geoffrey was Master of the College from 1989 to 2000, and continues to be a very active honorary fellow.
