Adrian Research Fellowship in Archaeology

The College is prepared, thanks to a generous original donation from Trinity College, Cambridge, to elect a stipendiary Adrian Research Fellow, if a suitable candidate applies.

Eligibility

Candidates should be at a relatively early stage in their research careers.   Candidates should have been awarded the PhD or an equivalently recognised degree, and be able to present to the electors substantial amounts of written work of outstanding quality, published or unpublished.   No candidate should have completed in total more than seven years of postgraduate research by 1 October 2010. The function of the Fellowship is to provide a formal, supported starting point for an academic career. Candidates should be engaged in research within the field of World Archaeology. In past archaeological endeavour, research has been especially active in Europe and North America. These regions have seen much of the discipline’s development, from both methodological and theoretical perspectives. The College is interested in applications that explore the implementation of approaches that are novel, in either methodological or theoretical terms, applied to other regions of the world.

Duties and Conditions

The Adrian Research Fellow will engage in research in his/her own special subject.  In addition, the Fellow may have the opportunity to undertake, during Term, up to six hours a week of undergraduate teaching in his/her own subjects at Trinity College, or another College, at the standard rates of pay.  Apart from this, an Adrian Research Fellow is not normally permitted to hold another post.  The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of Darwin College and will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the College, which may be seen on the College website or on request to the Bursar.  The Statutes include the obligation to reside in or near Cambridge for at least two-thirds of each University term, unless excused by the Governing Body.

Tenure

The Fellowship will run for three years from 1 October 2010.  The Fellowship is renewable for one further year to a maximum of four years after that period at the discretion of the Fellowships Committee.

Stipend and Emoluments

The stipend will be set at Point 19-33  (currently £16,665 - £20,746, pay award pending) on the Darwin College Single Salary spine, and will thereafter rise by annual increments.  Membership of The Universities’ Superannuation Scheme is optional.  In addition, the Adrian Research Fellow will be entitled to dine and lunch free of charge at the normal College table whenever meals are served (up to a limit of seven meals in each week), with the exception that the occasional special dinner must be paid for.  Guests, not normally exceeding two in number on any one occasion, may be entertained at lunch or dinner, ten of them free of charge within any quarter of the year.  An allowance of up to £1,000 a year will be available for receipted travel and research expenses. A further £500 a year available as a subsidy for conferences mounted in the College (paid at the discretion of the Fellowships and Finance Committees).  It may be possible to provide limited rented accommodation, subject to availability, for which a charge will be made. If College accommodation is not available, a living out allowance may be paid.

Applications

Applications should reach the Master, Darwin College, Cambridge CB3 9EU by 8 January 2010.  They should be typed and include six copies of (1) curriculum vitae; (2) an account, in not more than 500 words, of the proposed research and the background to it; (3) an assurance that, where necessary, appropriate research arrangements have been made; (4) the names and addresses of not more than three referees (including telephone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail addresses) who should be asked to write at once directly to the Master; and (5) a list of published or unpublished work that would be available for submission if requested.  Selected candidates may be invited not later than the end of January 2010 to submit copies of written work and may be called for interview during March 2010.  Election will be made as soon as possible thereafter.
