DARWIN COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE

Moses and Mary Finley Research Fellowship

Thanks to a bequest in the Will of Sir Moses and Lady Finley, Darwin College is able to elect a stipendiary research fellow.   In addition, Sir Moses bequeathed his personal library to the College to further the research of the successful candidate.   The Fellowship is restricted to research into the ancient history of the Mediterranean world and/or the near East, down to the end of the 6th century AD.  Preference will be given to those whose interests coincide with those of the late Sir Moses Finley.

Eligibility

The Fellowship is intended for an outstanding researcher who is completing, or who has recently completed, their Ph.D. Degree.   No candidate should have completed in total more than seven years of postgraduate research by 1 October 2009.

Duties

The Finley Research Fellow will engage in research full-time in his or her special subject within the field as defined.  The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of Darwin College and will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the College which may be seen on request to the Bursar.  The Statutes include the obligation to reside in or near Cambridge, for at least two-thirds of each University term, but the Governing Body will normally excuse absences made necessary by the nature of the research undertaken.

Tenure

The Fellowship is tenable for three years, with effect from 1 October 2009, with the possibility of renewal for a fourth.

Stipend and Emoluments

The annual stipend will start at not less than  £16,070  and up to  £16,507  per annum  (as at October 2008) initially, cost of living award pending, depending on age and experience.  Thereafter it will rise by annual increments on the standard University scale.  Membership of the Universities' Superannuation Scheme is optional.  In addition the Finley Research Fellow will be entitled to take seven meals per week at the College table free of charge and additional meals at his or her own expense whenever meals are served there.  Guests may be invited to all meals (within the limits of available accommodation), ten of them free of charge within any quarter of the year. Subject to availability, and for a maximum period of 2 years from the start of tenure, a Finley Research Fellow may be allocated an individual College bed-sitting room or flat depending on personal circumstances; an appropriate rental charge will be made. Separate study/teaching rooms in College will be available throughout the tenure of the Fellowship.   An annual allowance will be available for travel and research expenses up to a maximum of £ 1,000, with a further £500 per annum available at the discretion of the Fellowships Committee as a conference subsidy.

Applications

Applications should reach the Master, Darwin College, Cambridge CB3 9EU by 17 October 2008.  They should be typed and should include seven copies of (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) an account, in not more than 1000 words, of the proposed research, including any plans for fieldwork, which should include a brief statement of the aims of the research and the background to it, (3) the names and addresses of two referees (including telephone and fax numbers as well as e-mail addresses), who should be asked to write at once direct to the Master, and (4) a list of published or unpublished work that would be available for submission if requested. Testimonials should not be sent.  Short-listed candidates may be asked to make themselves available for interview at Darwin College on a date to be arranged before mid-January 2009:  election will be made as soon as possible thereafter.  In certain circumstances travelling expenses for overseas interviewees may be covered.

The College follows an equal opportunities policy
