The College has a limited number of small rooms available for supervisions, meetings and study groups. Study groups should have a majority of current Darwin members present, and be apolitical and secular in nature. To book a room please contact the Domestic Bursar’s Secretary. Please book as far in advance as you are able to as these rooms fill up very quickly; the College cannot guarantee that rooms will always be available for use. There is no charge for current members booking supervision rooms.
Rooms for larger meetings or seminars are also available to book – these rooms usually incur a hire charge, although this may be waived, at the discretion of the Domestic Bursar, for events open to all College members. Resources such as projectors, screens & flip charts can also be booked for meetings. Meetings and seminars held in College rooms must be apolitical and secular – if you are unsure about this policy please seek advice when making your booking. Contact the Domestic Bursar’s Secretary (domestic.bursars.secretary@darwin.cam.ac.uk [1]) for further details.
The Common Room may be booked for periods up to two hours between 5.00pm and 8.45pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and between 10.00am and 8.45pm on weekends. Bookings are made with the Domestic Bursar’s Secretary (domestic.bursars.secretary@darwin.cam.ac.uk [1]).
Use of the Common Room is free for Darwin College societies, or events which are open to all Darwin members. Bookings for University societies or private groups will incur a hire fee, and are subject to availability – please contact the Domestic Bursar’s Secretary for further details (domestic.bursars.secretary@darwin.cam.ac.uk [1]).
Barbecues are not allowed within College accommodation or in hostels but you can book the DCSA [2] barbecue for use on the First (small) Island, in the area to the left of the bridge. Island bookings are usually taken from 1st May to 30th October, depending on weather conditions.
Booking forms and the terms of conditions of use for the Island & DCSA [2] barbecue can be found on the DCSA [2] website http://www.dcsa.dar.cam.ac.uk/bbq-island [3]
To check availability and confirm your booking please email the Catering and Events Assistant events@darwin.cam.ac.uk [4]
The Island can only be booked by a current member or alumni of Darwin College, and the member should be present on the Island throughout the booking. One time slot per person may be booked each day – from either: 15.00 to 18.00 or from 18.00 to 21.00 (or until dark, whichever is sooner) on weekdays. At weekends an additional slot from 12.00 noon to 15.00 is available.
The maximum capacity for the Island is 50 people. There is no charge for current members hosting a private party, however bookings for University departments, societies or private companies incur a hire charge (see below).

The College bar – known as ‘DarBar’ - is located in the Hermitage (next to the Common Room) and staffed by students; these staff are from the graduate membership of the College and are listed on the Bar Rota. Only those so listed are permitted to serve behind the bar.
The bar is normally open seven days a week and the opening hours are from 21:00 to 23:59. The bar will be closed promptly at 23:59 each evening (unless an extension has been granted by the Domestic Bursar). Last orders are called at 23:40 and the stacking of drinks near to closing time is not permitted.
Members of College may bring a maximum of three guests into the bar. They must enter their name and those of their guests into the guest book held behind the bar. The guests remain the responsibility of their host and must leave the bar when their host leaves. Guests must be over the age of 18.
No person shall be served at the bar that is not known by the person in charge to be a member of College, or to have been signed in by a member of College. Persons not known must produce acceptable identification, such as a University Card, to prove their eligibility to use the Bar. Any person who refuses to comply with the request for identification shall be refused service at the bar.
The Domestic Bursar is the College Licensee and on his behalf the Porters will ask anyone who is drunk or disorderly to leave the bar if the Bar staff have not already done so.
An upright piano is available in the Common Room for casual use at most reasonable times.
A second upright Yamaha piano is located in the ground floor room of No.1 Newnham Terrace. This can be booked for piano practice between the hours of 9.00am & 9.00pm by current members, subject to availability – please contact the Domestic Bursar’s Secretary to make a booking (domestic.bursars.secretary@cam.ac.uk [5])
Use of the Grand Piano, located in the Dining Hall, is restricted to members studying for musical exams and/or for formal concerts.
DVD, television and gaming equipment are available for use in the TV room, located in Newnham Grange. College members may book the TV room for specific events by contacting the DCSA [2] Secretary (dcsa_secretary@darwin.cam.ac.uk [6]).
There are telephones available in corridors on the main site and in each of the hostels. These can be used to make free calls to University Telephone Network extensions and freefone numbers, including those operated by calling cards or credit-card calling services. Information about the location of these telephones is available from the Porter's Lodge.
Darwin College is lucky enough to occupy several fine late Georgian houses, with gardens running along the River Cam. Students are urged to maintain the tranquillity and quality of their surroundings by not leaving bags, crockery or litter either inside or out.
The gardens may be used for private social events in exceptional circumstances. A request for any such event must be made the Domestic Bursar. If a request is agreed, the person who makes the reservation must be present throughout the entire period. Such a reservation will not, however, mean that other users of the garden may be denied access.
