Visitors

Darwin College is a home and place of study for its students, and visitors are asked to respect this. Members of the public are generally welcome to visit the College gardens between 9am and 6pm. Picnics are not permitted, and no animals will be allowed on site. We cannot accommodate commercial tours or tourist groups. Academic, school, or other similar groups are only admitted by prior arrangement even if accompanied by a current member.

The College may be closed to visitors at times without notice, and the Porters’ directions should be followed at all times.

Permission should be sought in advance for any filming or photography for other than personal use.

The College reserves the absolute right at any time not to admit or to remove any person who is not a current College member.

How to Find Us

Within Cambridge

In and around Cambridge, the easiest and most common form of transport is bicycle. Darwin College is located close to the commercial centre of the city and within walking or cycling distance of most departments, faculty buildings and shopping.

This Cambridge Cyclestreets will be useful if you are planning to find your way on bicycle.

There is an excellent bus network and the University’s U bus stops just outside the main College entrance on Silver Street.

Travelling to Cambridge

By Rail

The usual method of travel from to Cambridge is by train. Click the following link to open a guide to the train services. Once you arrive in Cambridge, it is a long walk from the railway station to Darwin (about 30 minutes), so might better to hire a bicycle or take a bus.

By Air

The closest major airport to Cambridge is London Stansted – about half an hour by road from Cambridge. There is a bus service from Stansted to Cambridge every hour. The same coach service goes to London Heathrow (an hourly service, with a journey time of about two hours) and to London Gatwick (about three hours).

Darwin is within walking distance (10 minutes) of the Cambridge bus/coach station in Drummer Street.

By Road

Driving in Cambridge is not recommended due to the congestion and one-way systems.

Here is a map of Cambridge provided by the University, showing routes into the City Centre by road. The usual motorway approaches are via the M11 (from the South), or the A14 (from the North, East or West).

Please note that there are no public parking spaces at Darwin College, and drop off for loading and unloading luggage is via the main Silver Street entrance.

Please be aware that rising bollards have recently been introduced in Silver Street, meaning that the road is only passable in one direction during certain times of day. For more detailed information on this see Cambridgeshire County Council’s page on Silver Street.
