Darwin alumnus Dr Ludmil Alexandrov has harnessed the power of machine learning to identify biomarkers in breast and ovarian cancer tumours, in a breakthrough which could have a dramatic impact on the length of time patients wait for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.
Ludmil completed an MPhil in Computational Biology at Darwin in 2010, followed by a PhD in Genetics. Now a Professor in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California San Diego, his use of AI to confirm cancer was highlighted last week by CNN World.
“You get your test result immediately, and you can start treatment,” he told the programme.
Earlier this year, Ludmil was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in recognition of his pioneering contribution to research.
