Darwin is delighted to be able to offer its congratulations to the College Visitor, Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, who received an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Cambridge this week – the highest accolade the University can bestow.

Baroness Carr is Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the first woman to serve as Head of the Judiciary and President of the Courts in England and Wales. She is an alumna and Honorary Fellow of Trinity College.

Presided over by the Chancellor, the special congregation took place in the Chapel of Queens’ College rather than the Senate House, with reduced numbers owing to the exceptionally hot weather.

Honorary Doctorates were also conferred on seven further distinguished individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their respective fields:

  • Dr Angela Merkel (Doctor of Law)
  • Professor Philippe Sands (Doctor of Law)
  • Professor Yuk Ming Dennis Lo (Doctor of Medical Science)
  • Dr Fabiola Gianotti (Doctor of Science)
  • Sir Richard Eyre (Doctor of Letters)
  • Dame Rachel Whiteread (Doctor of Letters)
  • Sir George Benjamin (Doctor of Music)
