The triumphant Cambridge men’s team

Cambridge stormed to success at the Varsity Rugby Matches on Saturday, beating Oxford in both the men’s and the women’s games.

Three Darwinians were part of the triumphant men’s team, which saw its most convincing win since 1872, beating Oxford by 56-11. The women won by 10-5.

Ben Gompels (PhD Surgery, 2022) captained a team which also included Harry Jones (PhD Biology, 2022) and Stefan Nixon (PhD Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics, 2021), in the match held at London’s StoneX stadium.

Commentator Simon Ward described the men’s game as “the most emphatic victory in Varsity history.”

“It has all been about Cambridge,” he said. “The way that Cambridge have operated, the way that they’ve worked and the skills they’ve shown, the finishing power has been exemplary…one of the most impressive and impactful Varsity performances we’ve seen.”
