We are delighted that the microbiologist and geneticist Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier has been elected as an Honorary Fellow at Darwin College.

The founder and Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, Professor Charpentier was previously Director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology.

Born in Juvisy-sur-Orge, France, she studied biology, microbiology, biochemistry and genetics at the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, and the Institut Pasteur.

She is a global expert in the regulatory mechanisms underlying processes of infection and immunity in bacterial pathogens, and in 2020 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her ground-breaking work on the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology.
