Dr Derek Bendall

10 Dec 2014

Darwin College is very sad to announce the death of Dr Derek Bendall on 4th December 2014. In 1965 he was one of the first three people elected as Fellows, just one year after the College’s founding. In 1997 he was elected an Emeritus Fellow. His dedicated support for the College is shown by his service as the first College Secretary and by his subsequent twenty two years as Gardens Officer. Darwin College’s lovely informal gardens along the river banks have given much pleasure to generations of Darwinians. A member of the Biochemistry Department, he remained active there and in the College throughout his retirement. Derek Bendall will be greatly missed. Derek will have a small private family funeral. His family have suggested that should people wish to mark his death, they might like to make a donation to the Darwin College Development Fund.

The annual Charles Simonyi lecture was given by Professor David Mackay in Oxford on 14 November.
