We are thrilled to announce that work has begun on Darwin’s exciting transition to a more sustainable future. Over the next year we aim to degasify the estate through thermal improvements to the existing buildings, and the use of river source heat extraction.
Contractors are now on site preparing for the building of a riverside Pump House. Designed by 5th Studio, the building will draw on Darwin’s location on the Cam to use water-source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water for the Silver Street site, in the latest chapter of the river’s industrial heritage.
At the same time, work is beginning to prevent heat loss and improve the energy efficiency of the College buildings through window replacement and increased insulation.
The Master, Dr Mike Rands, said:
“It’s wonderful to see this exciting new phase of Darwin’s future begin to take shape. Our position on the River Cam is a cherished feature of the College site, and we are delighted to be able to make use of it to provide a sustainable source of heating and hot water, reducing our environmental impact and creating a visible example of an innovative approach towards our goal of carbon neutrality.”
Marking the breaking of ground on the project, the Master was joined by the architects, engineers and contractors responsible for its design and development from Joel Gustaffson Consulting, 5th Studio Architects, 3G Construction Consultants, MHA Structural Design, Barnes Construction and Mott MacDonald.
Regular updates will be shared on the College website as the works progress, and every effort will be made to limit the impact on those living and working on site.
